In the Afghan capital of Kabul, hundreds of shi’ite Muslims gathered outside a shrine early in the morning for self-flagellation.
Shi’ite Muslims across Afghanistan commemorated the religious festival of Ashoura on Monday, the 10th day of the month of Muharram in the Islamic calendar, by beating themselves with chains and steel-tipped flails.
