More U.S. troops are headed to Liberia to fight Ebola.

Incoming head of the U.S. military mission there, Major General Gary Volesky, made the announcement in Liberia's capital Monrovia on Saturday -- as he took over for U.S. general Darryl Williams.

"Thousands of my soldiers are arriving now, and they are excited and ready to join this great team you have formed, so together we can stamp out Ebola."

That same day, Liberia also received aid, with the first of three vessels arriving at the seaport of Buchanan.

A treatment center built by American forces is expected to open within weeks.

So far, around 4,900 people have died of Ebola in West Africa.

U.N. officials warn that figure could rise exponentially if the global community does not act swiftly.
