Many places in the world are brimming with jellyfish but in the state of Wisconsin, they are not a common sight.

That's why residents in Waupaca County, Wisconsin were shocked to learn about the recent discovery of jellyfish in a local lake.

Last week, a boater was out on the water when he saw one.
Bonnie Plunkett has lived by the lake for nearly 50 years and she got wind of the sighting after the man came to her door to ask if she had ever seen the species in the water. In all that time, she had never witnessed one.

Paul Skawinski, who works as a Regional Aquatic Invasive Species Education Specialist at Golden Sands Resource Conservation and Development Council has confirmed what the man saw is indeed a jellyfish.

Skawinski claims to have seen 25 or 30 of them in just one small area of the lake. He remarked “They are not common at all in Wisconsin, we know of only 100 lakes that have them and they have been seen here since 1969.”

The freshwater variety is a species native to China. Skawinski believes the creatures were illegally placed into the lake by people dumping water gardens and aquariums.

Fortunately the freshwater jellyfish are no threat to humans or their surroundings.
