Islamic State raises flag on eastern side of Kobani

Islamic State fighters are pressing in on this mostly Kurdish town from three sides, pounding it with heavy artillery.

The militants want Kobani so they can consolidate their dramatic sweep across northern Syria and neighboring Iraq.

Kurdish fighters have been fighting them off for two weeks, but the Kurds are outgunned and their efforts are becoming increasingly desperate.

Air strikes by American and Gulf state warplanes failed to halt the advance of Islamic State on Kobani.

They only moved to the town's outskirts over the weekend while battling to secure a strategic hilltop.

The Kurds vow not to let Islamic State seize their land.
