In order for people to hear a tune, they have to drive over the strips and travel the posted speed limit of 45 miles per hour. Only one song is played and its ‘America the Beautiful’.
The so-called singing road is part of a project for a new show on National Geographic called ‘Crowd Control’, which aims to change social conduct through unique experiments.
If a driver goes just a few miles above or under the speed limit, the song can’t be heard.
New Mexico Department of Transportation Secretary Tom Church remarked “Speeding is a factor in too many vehicle crashes in New Mexico. The goal of this experiment is to change driver behavior in a fun way by giving them a reward if they obey the speed limit.”
The rumble strips may also prevent drivers from passing out while behind the wheel. National Geographic paid for the serenading patch of highway. It is said to be a permanent fixture on Route 66.
