Japanese volcano death toll over 45 as more bodies recovered

The death toll from Japan’s worst volcaniceruption in decades is likely to rise to more than 45.

Military searchers brought down more bodies on Wednesday from Mount Ontake after restarting the recovery operation.

It had been suspended the previous day after fears of further eruptions and poisonous gases being emitted.

The eruption on Saturday covered Mount Ontake in thick ash and volcanic rock – suddenly and without warning. The beauty spot was packed with climbers, including children, enjoying the autumn scenery.

Authorities warn the eruption is still under way, and smoke has been seen again coming from the volcano
