Gaza celebrates as Palestinian president announces ceasefire

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas announced on Tuesday (August 26) a Gaza ceasefire deal with Israel has been reached under Egyptian mediation.

There was no immediate confirmation from Israel, where a spokesman for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declined to comment.

"I would like to announce the agreement of the Palestinian leadership to the invitation by our brotherly Egypt to a comprehensive and permanent ceasefire starting at 19:00 tonight local Cairo and Palestine time," Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said.

Cairo's initiative, Palestinians officials said, called for an indefinite halt to seven weeks of hostilities, the immediate opening of Gaza's blockaded crossings with Israel and Egypt and a widening of the enclave's fishing zone in the Mediterranean.
