Locals flee eastern Ukraine amid fighting and lack of supplies

In Ukraine’s volatile eastern region, locals are continuing to flee ongoing fighting between Ukrainian forces and rebels.

Luhansk, the smaller of two main rebel strongholds, has been cut off from food supplies and left with almost no electricity or running water.

The city is almost completely surrounded by government troops.

One Luhansk resident summed up his situation: “There is no water, no gas, no mobile phone reception, no groceries and only about ten litres of fuel at each petrol station. We need to get our children out, you know.”

The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) said 230,000 people have fled fighting in the region. The majority of those have crossed the border into Russia.
