Aleksandr Borodai, the leader of the self-proclaimed People’s Republic of Donetsk has told a news conference that what he believes to be the black boxes from flight MH17 are in his keeping.

Borodai told reporters: “I can tell you that, as of today, we have found some technical details of the plane, which we suppose could be the black boxe, the so-called black boxes.”

Borodai said he was ready to hand over the objects that he believes to be the black boxes to officials from the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

The Ukrainian Security Service posted a recording online that it claimed was part of telephone call between two rebels discussing the black boxes on Friday, the day after the MH17 crash.

The recording features the voice of a man, named by the Ukrainian Security Service as rebel commander Oleksandr Khodakovsky, asking other rebels about the black boxes.

In the recording, the voice of the man named as Khodakovsky says “Moscow” wants to know about the black boxes – and when he is told that something that could be a flight recorder has been found, he gives the instruction to “hide” it.
