Five-hour window for Israelis, Palestinians to buy groceries ends with explosions

Traffic--- and lines at the bank --- as a temporary ceasefire went into effect in Gaza and Israel. The United Nations requested a five hour break from the fighting on Thursday -- just enough time to give locals a chance to buy groceries and pay bills.

Errands that have carried much greater risk since the cross-border attacks started over a week ago.

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) GAZA RESIDENT, ZAKARIYA ABED ALWAHED, SAYING:

"For days we have been imprisoned in our homes because of the offensive and the hits, today we could move. As for the economic situation, a lot of people are going to the bank and there is not enough money. Many employees haven't been paid so people are under pressure and we hope the coming days will be better and this crisis will be over for good."

In Southern Israel town of Ashkilon, locals ventured out cautiously amid reports from the military that mortars had landed in an open area. No other details were available.
