Two boaters were thrown out of a boat and into the ocean after their vessel was hit by one or possibly two blue whales. The scary incident occurred about 12 miles off the coast of San Diego.

Wildlife photographer Dale Frinks was onboard the boat along with captain Cici Sayer. Frinks was attempting to capture photos of whales when the boat capsized.

“Sayer says the whales went under for a few minutes until one lunged again and slammed down onto the boat tipping it over and throwing the two boaters into the water.” [Via KSWB]

Both Frinks and Sayer believe two whales struck the vessel, but the photographer was only able to snap a picture of one creature right before he landed in the ocean.

Frinks later remarked “I saw me looking very ridiculous, falling in the water but still getting the shot, so I don't know if I'm proud of myself or not yet.”

Luckily another boater reported the accident and rushed to Frinks and Cici to help get them out of the ocean. They were both uninjured.

A commercial salvage vessel came out to tow the capsized boat to Shelter Island.
