Two men are suring the New Jersey Lottery Commission after throwing away a winning slip of paper. The Powerball ticket that is worth $1 million is now resting somewhere in a Canadian landfill.

Salvatore Cambria and Erik Onyango of New York state claimed they threw away the ticket because the lottery’s website hadn’t updated the winning numbers. The men said they checked the site and found the numbers didn’t match their ticket so they believed it was a loser.
Now the males are going to court to get their money, citing the New Jersey Lottery Commission failed to post the winning numbers in a timely fashion. The $338 million jackpot Powerball drawing is from March 23rd of last year. The two New York men got every digit correct except for the Powerball, which should have landed them a consolation prize of $1 million.
Cambria claims he asked Onyango to check the numbers online several minutes after the drawing. When they didn’t match, the paper was placed in a cigarette pack which in turn was thrown in the garbage.
The next day, they saw the updated numbers and realized their ticket was a winner. By that time, the trash had already been hauled off to Canada. The males reportedly have proof they purchased the ticket from a New Jersey 7-Eleven.
