São Paulo Neighborhood Erupts in Deafening Cheers When Brazil Scores

It started with a vuvuzela, then a scream, and suddenly a seemingly quiet São Paulo neighborhood erupted in deafening cheers as Brazil scored its first goal against Croatia in the opening game of the World Cup. Local resident Claus Wahlers filmed the reaction from his home in Moema, São Paulo, as the match between host team Brazil and Croatia unfolded on June 12.In the 28th minute, after an embarrassing own goal, Brazil came from behind to score on Croatia, tying up the match, 1-1. The roar of Brazilian fans watching from their apartments was punctuated by the sound of fireworks exploding in the sky.
The same reaction rocked the city at 70 minutes (2-1) and again at 90 minutes (3-1). Finally, a prolonged celebration of fog horns, explosions and shrieks echoed across the city when it was clear that Brazil would defeat Croatia, 3-1. Credit: Claus Wahlers
