Violence Erupts at Anti-Austerity Rally in Puerto Rico

Police and protesters clashed in Puerto Rico’s capital San Juan at a May Day protest march over proposed austerity measures.Thousands of protesters joined the march through San Juan’s business district on Tuesday to voice their opposition to plans to raise tuition fees at the island’s public universities, shutter schools, cut pensions and other welfare programs, according to reports. Governor Ricardo Rosselló’s government faces the challenge of ending a 11-year recession and rebuilding the island, which was devastated by Hurricane Maria, while managing $72 billion in debt.The Miami Herald reported the day took a violent turn at the end of the march with small groups of protesters throwing stones and other objects at police who responded with tear gas and rubber bullets.This video shows protesters fleeing tear gas, police making arrests, and one officer receiving medical aid.
