A man in Aurora, Colorado is back in prison after spending the past 6 years free. Rene Lima-Marin was jailed for robbing two videos stores at gunpoint when he was only 19 years of age.

According to Lima-Marin, the rifle he used in the crimes was not loaded. No one was hurt in the robberies, but he received multiple sentences to be served consecutively totaling 98 years.

A decade into his prison term, he was set free. In the past six years since his release, Lima-Marin bought a house, married his ex-girlfriend, helped raise her son and they had a child together.

Basically, he lived a normal, happy existence – that is until January of this year when a judge ordered him to return to jail and serve the rest of the 98 year sentence there.

Lima-Marin says his appeals lawyer told him 13 years ago that his sentences were instead going to run concurrently for a total of 16 years. Unfortunately the attorney was incorrect due to a clerical error and so were court documents sent to the Department of Corrections.

His nearly 100 year term reflects a campaign that is no longer used called ‘chronic offender program’.

Given that he has eight convictions from his youth for both robbery and kidnapping, the consecutive sentences add up to life in prison.

His family has set up a petition online that requires 20 thousand signatures for his quick release. A Gofundme page has also been launched to help pay for legal fees.
