A climber in Oregon is remarkably lucky to be alive after falling down Mount Hood. It was a little before 9 in the morning when local police received a report that a man, later identified as 59-year-old Michael Adams had fallen near the Hogsback area.

Fortunately other climbers had been out and about at the time and rushed to help him. According to a witness, Loraine Heckenberg, she saw Adams tumble hundreds of feet down the mountain.

He finally came to a stop in a fumarole, a vapor and sulphur emitting vent situated in a volcanic region. Adams was reportedly able to speak but he couldn’t move his body.

Nearly 20 volunteers with the Portland Mountain Rescue went into the fumarole and pulled Adams out to safety. At about 2 in the afternoon, a National Guard Blackhawk helicopter picked Adams up and transported him to the hospital.

Adams had reportedly been at an elevation of 10 thousand feet when he slipped on ice and subsequently fell. According to the family, he remains in ‘good spirits’ despite the traumatic ordeal.
