Gunman kills six in rampage in California college town

A gunman described as severely mentally disturbed killed six people in a rampage in a Southern California college town Friday night.

At a news conference on Saturday, Santa Barbara Sheriff Bill Brown confirmed the suspect as 22-year-old Elliot Rodger.

SOUNDBITE (English) SANTA BARBARA SHERIFF BILL BROWN SAYING:

"This was a chaotic, rapidly unfolding and convoluted incident that involved multiple crime scenes."

Rodger allegedly stabbed three victims in his apartment before gunning down three more victims.

Brown said Rodger had three legally purchased handguns and 41 loaded magazines in his car.

"With the assitance of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, we have determined that all of these weapons were legally purchased from federally licensed firearms dealers and that they were all registered to the suspect."
