Syrian war: Huge bomb explosion destroys Aleppo hotel used by Assad's forces

Syrian rebels have destroyed a hotel in the northern city of Aleppo being used by President Bashar al-Assad's military forces, state media reported on Wednesday.
Insurgents say the Carlton Hotel, opposite Aleppo's ancient citadel, was being used as an army command center. The Islamic Front, which carried out the bombing which destroyed the hotel, says it was also being used to store munitions.
Reports say a huge amount of explosives were placed in a tunnel the insurgents dug beneath the building. Opposition fighters routinely use such methods to attack regime military positions.
The remote detonation created a massive explosion which destroyed the hotel and caused the collapse of several neighboring buildings. It's not known how many people were killed.
As Reuters reports, the Islamic Front "published video footage which showed a huge column of debris and dust erupting into the Aleppo skyline.
"It said 50 soldiers were killed in the blast but did not say how it arrived at that death toll.
"The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the violence through a network of security and medical sources and activists across Syria, said at least 14 members of the security forces were killed."
The attack comes just two days after the same group destroyed a Syrian military checkpoint in a similar fashion. That attack killed more than 30 people.
