Suspected Boko Haram gunmen kidnap eight girls in north east Nigeria

Suspected Boko Haram gunmen have kidnapped eight girls between the age of 12 and 15 from a village in the north east of the country.

Witnesses claim they were loaded onto military trucks and driven away with stolen livestock.

The Islamist group is still holding more than 200 teenagers taken from a school in Chibok on April 14.

Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau posted a boastful video message where he claimed his militia had kidnapped the girls and he was going to sell them.

There is growing international outrage.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague pulled no punches in condemning the actions of Boko Haram: “We are offering practical help. What has happened here, the actions of Boko Haram in using girls as the spoils of war, the spoils of terrorism, is disgusting. It is immoral. It should show everybody across the world that they should not give any support to such a vile organisation.”

The families of the missing girls are furious with the actions of their government and the failure of the Nigerian military to locate the students and bring about an end to the insurgency in the north east that has left 1,500 dead this year.
