At least three people were killed in a huge landslide in the state of Washington on Saturday (March 22).

The landslide happened near the town of Oso, about 90 km north of Seattle at about 11 am, according to the BBC. Two people were killed at the scene. Seven adults and a 6-month-old boy were injured and sent to local hospitals, CNN reported.

At least six houses were destroyed in the landslide, which also covered a part of the State Road 530. It also caused blockage in the Stillaguamish River. It is estimated the water is rising at 25 to 30 cm per 30 minutes upstream of the dam, according to the Seattle Times. A flood warning is in effect for the north fork area and a flood watch has been issued for Snohomish County, although the National Weather Service said "catastrophic flash flooding" is unlikely.

It was reported by CNN that ground water saturation tied to heavy rainfall in the area over the past month was the cause for the landslide.
