Steven Colbert recently appeared as a guest on his future show.

On April 3rd, David Letterman announced that he will be retiring from the ‘Late Show With David Letterman’ in 2015. Shortly after that declaration was made, CBS announced Stephen Colbert would be filling his shoes.

And if you’re wondering how Letterman feels about his replacement, you now have an answer. Colbert recently appeared as a guest on his future show and Letterman seems to be genuinely happy with his successor.

In the interview, the two joked and at one point even took a Selfie together. The duo also spoke about how Colbert applied to be an intern on the ‘Late Show’ in the mid 1980s and sent in a writing sample for a job in 1997.

"I did the foolest thing. I did not take the internship." [Colbert]
"Why was that? [Letterman]
"Because you didn't pay people?" [Colbert]

Serving as a few not-so-subtle hints Letterman is in favor of the upcoming host, he referred to Colbert as ‘always entertaining’ and called him ‘my friend’. Colbert didn’t need to make his feelings known about Letterman.

On the April 10th airing of his current show, ‘The Colbert Report’ he commented ‘Dave has been on the air my entire adult life. Late Night debuted my first night in college. I learned more from watching Dave than going to my classes, especially the ones I did not go to because I stayed up till 1:30 watching Dave.’
