Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, the prize fighter whose career was cut short by a wrongful murder conviction that became an international symbol for racial injustice, has died at 76.

John Artis, who was convicted with Carter in 1967, said Carter died in his sleep on Sunday. Carter had been battling prostate cancer in Toronto.

Carter spent 19 years in prison after being twice convicted by all-white juries, first in 1967 and then in 1976, for a New Jersey triple murder in 1966. The conviction was largely based on the testimonies of two white burglars who made side deals with the prosecution.

Carter was finally freed in November 1985 when his convictions were set aside after years of appeals and public advocacy. His case and the racial motivations behind it were publicized in Bob Dylan's 1975 song Hurricane, several books and a 1999 movie starring Denzel Washington, who received an Academy Award nomination for playing the fighter-turned-prisoner.

Hurricane was a former petty criminal who turned into an undersized middleweight contender, largely on his ferocity and punching power. In his career, Carter went 27-12-1 with 19 knockouts.

Carter was freed in 1985, after which he moved to Toronto and in 2004 founded Innocence International, a nonprofit that seeks to free wrongfully convicted prisoners.

Rest in peace, Hurricane.
