Violence erupted between two gangs in a Karachi marketplace on Wednesday (March 12), killing 14 and injuring dozens of others in one of the most violent clashes seen in Karachi in recent months.

The clash took place a day after a member of one gang was kidnapped by the other gang. The groups, which local police believe belong to factions of the once-dominant Baba Ladla group, exchanged fire in a marketplace in Lyari district and later fired rocket-propelled guns and hurled hand-grenades at each other. Fourteen people, including women and children, were killed, and 39 others were injured.

Major Siptain Rizvi, a spokesman for paramilitary troops, said that two gangsters had been killed and one had been arrested.

Another report said that the shooting took place after the brother of a gang leader was killed by the police on Tuesday night.

"In reaction, gangsters came to a market on Wednesday morning in Lyari and opened indiscriminate fire, killing women and children along with the men," senior police officer Abdul Khalique Shaikh said in a Reuters report.

Gangs representing rival political and ethnic groups frequently clash in the troubled district of Lyari.
