US Embassy in Afghanistan hit by mortar fire, no casualties

The U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan was hit by indirect fire early on Christmas morning (December 25). Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
According to a statement released by the embassy, "At approximately 6:40 local time in Kabul, approximately two rounds of indirect fire impacted the U.S. Embassy compound."
The mortar rockets set off emergency sirens and sent US diplomats rushing for shelter. However, all Americans are accounted for and no injuries were sustained, the embassy statement said.
Meanwhile, another rocket landed near a hill where former kings and members of the old royal family are buried in a large mausoleum, according to a spokesman for the National Directorate of Security.
Taliban is claiming responsibility for the attacks, saying the indirect fire caused mass casualties. However, the Taliban's claims have not been verified, and the group has been known for exaggerating their claims.
The embassy is continuing to investigate the attack.
Rocket attacks in Kabul have been rare in recent years, but the insurgents have said they will place more pressure on the U.S. and Afghan authorities before next year's presidential election and the withdrawal of U.S.-led NATO combat forces, according to an Al Arabiya report.
Elsewhere the same day, Afghan officials said a bicycle bomb was remotely detonated in front of a restaurant in Puli Alam, the capital of Logar province, killing six people and wounding 13.
