Scottish yachtsman, Andrew Halcrow, who was attempting to sail solo around the world has been rescued by the Chilean navy after he was caught in a storm on Sunday (March 9).

According to the Shetland News, the 54-year-old was caught in a storm west of Cape Horn, about 386 km west of Punta Arenas on Saturday. He made an emergency call after the mast of his yacht, the Elsi Arrub, broke and the propulsion system failed. He was rescued by a Chilean naval helicopter 24 hours later, Herald Scotland reported.

Halcrow left Falmouth, Cornwall in early November and has planned to sail around the world then back to Falmouth in December 2014. He had to abandon his first solo round-the-world voyage in 2006, when he became seriously ill while crossing the Southern Ocean.
