Chris Prewitt, the assistant principal of DeAnza Academy of Arts and Technology, was killed while jogging when he was struck by a vehicle in Ventura, California Sunday morning.

Prewitt was an active athlete and competed in the Olympic Games for the hearing impaired. He was preparing for an upcoming marathon and jogging on the shoulder of the road. Shante Chappell was driving southbound on Victoria Ave in her 2011 Volkswagen. She merged lanes just south of Oliva Park and fatally struck Prewitt at 6:50 a.m.

Chris Prewitt died at the scene at the age of 38. He is survived by his wife, Erin Prewitt, and daughter, Isabella.

23-year-old Chappell was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence. The specific drug that Chappell was high on was not mentioned in reports.

A memorial was erected for Prewitt at the site of the incident. Students, friends, and faculty members will remember him as a positive and inspirational person. "He was a perfect example of someone that cared about people," said former colleague, Jena Branstetter.
