A Metro-North train headed toward Manhattan's Grand Central Terminal derailed on Sunday morning (December 1) was reportedly speeding before the derailment. It was travelling nearly three times faster than the speed limit for the curve where it crashed.

National Transportation Safety Board investigators said the brakes of the train were working properly but were applied just seconds before it derailed. The black-box recorders from the train showed it had been travelling at 132 kilometres per hour (82 miles per hour) before entering the 48 kph (30 mph) curve.

However, authorities are still investigating whether the wreck was the result of human error or mechanical problems.

Four people were killed and more than 60 were injured, including the train operator in the derailment. It was reported that three of the dead were found outside the train, and one was found inside.
