US sends more troops and tanks to South Korea

The United States said on Tuesday (January 7) that it will deploy more troops and tanks to South Korea next month as part of a military rebalance in East Asia.
The U.S. will deploy 40 M1A2 Abrams main battle tanks, 40 Bradley fighting vehicles and 800 soldiers from the 1st US Cavalry Division to South Korea on February 1, according to a Reuters report.
The M1A2 Abrams main battle tank's primary weapon is 120-mm M256 smoothbore cannon. It can fire different rounds against armoured vehicles, personnel and low-flying aircraft. It has extra layers of steel and depleted uranium armour that protect it from almost any tank round and most missiles. It can also launch smoke grenades in all directions, which allows it to hide from the enemy. The Bradley fighting vehicle is a light armored personnel carrier designed to move fast and it is designed to cross any terrain, including water.
The new equipment and troops will be deployed in North Gyeonggi province, south of the demilitarized zone between the two Koreas. The new troops will add to the existing 28,000 US troops based in South Korea. They will be stationed in South Korea for nine months, but the equipment will be left behind to be used by follow-on rotations of U.S. forces.
The deployment of the additional U.S. troops and equipment comes at a time of raised tensions on the Korean peninsula after Kim Jong Un executed his powerful uncle last month.
