Clashes have broken out between police and protesters in Turkey after the death of a teenager hurt in anti-government demonstrations last year.

Tear gas was used to disperse crowds in Istanbul and Ankara.

This after 14-year-old Berkin Elvan died in hospital, nine months after falling into a coma with head injuries. The teenager got caught up in street clashes in June, reportedly on his way to buy groceries for his family. He was hit on the head by a tear-gas canister.

The latest violence, with more protests expected, comes at a bad time for the prime minister, Tayyip Erdogan. He is already embroiled in a corruption scandal, just weeks before local elections.
