U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine: Discussion "over" on Crimea's future

Russian forces consolidate their hold on Ukraine's Crimea peninsula Monday, taking over a military hospital and a missile base as officials gear up for a referendum on the region's future.

Against this backdrop, U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt is adamant about Crimea's future.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. AMBASSADOR TO UKRAINE GEOFFREY PYATT SAYING:

"Crimea is and should remain a part of Ukraine. Discussion is over."

The Russian forces' seizure of the region has been bloodless, but tensions are mounting following the decision by pro-Russian groups there to make Crimea part of Russia.

"The very strong view is that there is no military solution to this crisis. This is a crisis which needs to be solved diplomatically. The Ukrainian government, the Ukrainian military forces in Crimea have an exceptional record so far of resisting the provocations that are clearly being undert
