A 9-year-old girl named Spozhmai detained at a checkpoint in Afghanistan's Helmand Province in on January 5 for wearing a suicide vest gave an interview to the BBC about what happened before her arrest.

In the BBC report, Spozhmai said her brother took her outside their house and told her to put on a suicide vest while showing her how to operate it. She was scared, and her brother took back the vest and hit her hard. Her brother then took her to a police checkpoint near their house. He gave her the suicide vest and ordered her to operate it before leaving her.

Spozhmai said she slept in the desert after her brother left. A police officer found her in the morning and took her to the checkpoint to talk to a commander. After hearing her story, the commander told her to go home. Spozhmai refused and said she was poorly treated at home. She was then taken to the Lashkar Gah, the provincial capital where she is still in the protective custody of the provincial government.
