The controversial new method uses a computer algorithm to map the different kinds of crime reported, and dispatches police officers on the beat to those areas with more activity.
The areas are mapped out in 500 square foot boxes and police presence in those areas is reportedly referred to as “inside the box.”
LAPD Captain Sean Malinowski is quoted as saying: “We're trying to prevent that crime or deny the criminal the opportunity to commit the crime in the first place.”
Statistics from LAPD show that crime has decreased in the city for 11 straight years, but community activists are worried that these kinds of enforcement techniques might target members of poor communities as well as those of color.
The concern is that enforcement will be different in rich neighborhoods than it is in poor neighborhoods.
But the civilian led Los Angeles Police Commission, has given the LAPD the go ahead to implement a limited form of the predictive policing city wide as long as crime rates continue to fall.
