Man abducts third-grade girl in Japan, taxi driver saves her

A Japanese taxi driver called the police on Sunday to report that he had picked up a fare who looked like the composite sketch of a man believed to have kidnapped a third-grade girl in Sapporo.

The suspect, Hajime Matsui, 26, allegedly abducted the girl on January 27 while she was on her way home and took her to his apartment.

The victim's mother called the police the same day when her daughter failed to return home. Hokkaido police launched an investigation on January 29. They compiled a composite sketch from security camera footage and eyewitness reports.

The taxi driver saw Matsui and called police on February 2. The driver told the police that Matsui was holding girls' comic books in the taxi and that he looked like the man in the sketch.

When Matsui left his apartment, the police approached him and began questioning him. Matsui said he knew nothing about the girl, but this didn't stop the police searching his apartment, where they found the girl. The apartment is 350 meters away from the girl's home.

Matsui is also charged with wrapping the girl tightly in adhesive tape while confining her in his apartment. He denied the charges during questioning. Police are continuing their investigation.
