Deadly pile up kills three and injures 20 in Michigan City, Indiana

A deadly traffic pile up, involving more than 30 vehicles on the snowy route between Chicago and Detroit, killed three people and injured 20 in northwestern Indiana on Thursday. One person among the injured was listed in critical condition.
At least 15 semi-trucks, and just as many cars, slammed into each other on the eastbound side of I-94, just outside of Michigan City. Traffic was stalled for hours as authorities and rescue crew worked against heavy snowfall to aid the stranded and clear the interstate. Heavy snow and whiteout conditions are believed to be the cause of the pile up.
One witness, 17-year-old Scott Collins of Chesterton, Ind., said he saw the crash happen just behind him. A semi-truck started sliding and jackknifed in the middle of the road, then collided with another semi, causing a chain reaction down a line of trucks, he said. A box truck got stuck on a guardrail and nearly went over into a waterway, he told AP.
The eastbound side of the highway was expected to be closed overnight as cranes and wreckers worked to clear the wreckage, police said.
Police said city buses were sent in to warm stranded passengers and transport the injured. Some drivers were stuck more than five hours in the temperatures around 10F degrees extreme cold while they waited for the traffic to move.
