Taiwan's Presidential Office to enhance security after attack

A man rammed his 35-tonne dump truck into Taiwan's Presidential Office on Jan 25th, smashing security railings and eventually stopped by a bulletproof security screen. The incident exposed the Presidential Office's lax security, which leaves the guards only five seconds to react to any attack.

The security guards had only five second to stop the 41-year-old assailant named Chang Te-Cheng (張正德), who was driving 72 km/hr towards the Presidential Office. The bulletproof screen needs eight seconds to be completely shut. Fortunately, the half-closed screen managed to stop the speeding truck.

A cross-agency meeting, which was convened the Presidential Office Secretary-General Timothy Yang, was called to discuss security enhancements.

At least 20 granite rocks have now been placed in front of the Presidential Office as a temporary security measure after the attack. Steel will be added to the bulletproof screen during restoration. .
