Original 'Grease' musical plays Pakistan, Bollywood star Chopra signs record deal

It’s the latest sensation on Pakistan’s hectic theatre scene.
The popular musical ‘Grease’ – one of Broadway’s longest running shows – is now being staged in Karachi. It is directed by lawyer-turned-theatre director Nida Butt, who has previously produced ‘Chicago’ and ‘Mamma Mia’.
She says it’s a great opportunity for Karachi’s thriving theatre scene.
“In the last 10 years, the theatre industry in Pakistan has grown rapidly. More and more people are putting money into it, more and more directors are entering into the field, there seems to be real scope. There is a show happening at the Arts Council (of Pakistan) 365 days a year. So, the industry is developing rapidly and I think it (offers) great prospects, great future prospects. The film industry and music industry are developing, too. But this is the first time we have seen theatre develop so well and so fast,” the director explained.
With its timeless music and story of teenage love, it is hoped the musical will appeal to young people in Pakistan despite cultural differences. Nothing was changed in the original script.
But with tickets costing the equivalent of 15 euros each, it looks like the play will only be accessible to a very small number of theatre-goers in Pakistan.
‘Grease’ runs until early February at the Arts Council of Pakistan in Karachi.
Priyanka Chopra signs major US record deal
In India Bollywood superstar Priyanka Chopra is breaking onto the global music scene, becoming the first Bollywood actress to win a major record deal in the US.
She even beat Miley Cyrus and Justin Timberlake in the Just Jared Most Popular Music Videos list last year coming in second position after Rihanna.
Her latest single ‘Exotic’, featuring American rapper Pitbull, has already got nearly 30 million views on YouTube.
The Indian mega star was recently in London where she talked about her music:
“I’m an extremely moody person and being an actor I’ve treated my album very much the way I treat my movies, which depends on my mood. So I used to go into the studio and just write whatever I was feeling and by the end of it I realised that my album’s turned out to be a little bit like my diary, which may be telling too much,” says Chopra.
