Janet Yellen has been officially approved by the US Senate to take the reins at the Federal
Reserve.

She becomes the first women to lead the central bank in its 100 year history.

The vote 56 to 26 is the last procedural hurdle for the 67-year-old before taking over from Ben Bernake after his term as Federal chairman expires on January 31.

Yellen is the first Fed chair nominated by a Democratic president since Paul Volcker left the top spot in 1987.
