Scores are killed in Iraq in a string of bombings targeting mainly Shi'ite Muslims ahead of a Shi'ite holy day.

It makes this year's bloodshed in Iraq the worst it's been in five years.

In Baghdad, authorities say a string of car bombs and roadside bombs killed at least 14 people.

"It was a pick-up truck that exploded near them, and the people are suffering now. Are Allah and Mohammed accepting of the bombings? All the people closed their shops. Why? Why are the people leaving their houses early in the morning? Just for work, they want to make living."

Dozens more were killed in various blasts on Shi'ite neighborhoods and security forces throughout the day. No single group has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Opponents have criticized Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's Shi-ite-led government for fueling Sunni discontent.
