Former Thai prime minister charged with murder

Former Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has been charged with murder in connection with the deaths of two protesters in 2010.
The 43-year-old man and 14-year-old girl were killed during a crackdown on anti-government demonstrators where around 90 people died.
Abhisit’s government approved the use of live ammunition under limited conditions and used snipers during the demonstrations.
The move comes amid weeks of protests that have shaken the Thai capital Bangkok.
Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has called for dialogue.
“The government is ready to listen to different opinions and is ready for discussions to find the right solution for Thailand. Currently, there are many groups and organizations who want to take part, and join in peaceful discussion. The discussion will lead to the reform of Thailand in the future,” she said.
Overnight protesters cut off electricity to the prime minister’s office and threatened to force their way in if police didn’t leave.
Prime Minister Yingluck already dissolved parliament and called for an election scheduled for February 2. However protesters want to install an unelected “people’s council” to run Thailand.
