STORY: Greek police fired tear gas at crowds of protesting students in Athens on Friday after the students pelted them with stones, bottles, firecrackers and other projectiles.
The thousands of university and high school students were commemorating the death of Alexis Grigoropoulos, a 15-year-old shot dead by a police officer on December 6, 2008, in an incident that sparked violent protests and arson in the capital.
Fueled by anger at unemployment and economic hardship, the riots lasted for weeks, turning central Athens into a virtual no-go area and helping topple the conservative government of Costas Karamanlis.
As well as marking Grigoropoulos' death, students said they were also protesting against government economic reforms, which have cut funding at all levels of education and have led to major job losses in the sector.
