NYU student Asher Vongtau trapped between buildings for two days

A 19-year-old NYU student, Asher Vongtau, was trapped in the narrow gap between two buildings in lower Manhattan for almost two days after an unexplainable fall on Saturday. The sophomore fell in an alley about 10-inches wide, according to a New York Fire Department report, which separated an NYU dormitory building and a parking garage.

The sophomore went missing after a 7 a.m. fire drill, according to reports. Friends said he was last seen running up a flight of stairs after the alarms went off, but when he failed to reappear later in the day, they called security.

University security guards searched the building, eventually finding his phone on the roof, which led them to find his body wedged between the 17-story building and adjacent garage. Vongtau was injured, but conscious enough to communicate.

Fire and emergency services were called around 5 p.m. Sunday and arrived at 80 Lafayette Street to find Vongtau lying on his left side, with his legs crossed. Using a refined concrete breaker, they worked their way into the wall of the garage, careful not to hit Vongtau who was tightly packed into the small space. Once the hole was big enough, they were able to free Vongtau, who was seriously injured, but responsive. All told, the process took about two hours.

Vongtau was taken to Bellevue Hospital. He broke his right arm and pelvis and suffered contusions, but is in stable condition.

Vongtau said he has no memory of what happened. He lived on the fifth floor of the dormitory and some reports suggested he might have fallen out of a window.
