Living close to neighbors can often cause issues. One Spanish woman is facing jail time after a nearby dweller complained to authorities about her music practice.
Specifically, the neighbor considered the tunes to be noise pollution. The case recently made its way to court. The neighbor and plaintiff, named Sonia alleged that the tenant Laia Martin who lived downstairs from her, practiced her piano playing at least 8 hours daily, usually five days a week from 2003 through 2007.
Martin had reportedly been studying music in college during that time period, and is today a concert pianist. Sonia wasn’t just bothered by the playing.
She claimed to have experienced “psychic injury consisting of an adjustment disorder with anxiety symptoms to environmental stress reactive ear type.” She went even further saying that she had trouble sleeping and suffered panic attacks from Martin’s music.
According to the defendant, she did not practice the piano nearly as much as Sonia said, as she took lessons out of the home. A trial is underway and not only Martin, but her parents, may be forced to go behind bars for allowing the piano playing to continue despite Sonia’s complaints.
