Right-wing historian commits suicide in Notre-Dame Cathedral

A French far-right activist committed suicide inside the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris in the French capital on Tuesday, three days after a law legalising same-sex marriage came into effect, according to a Reuters report.

Dominique Venner took his life shortly after 4pm at the cathedral, one of Paris' biggest tourist draws, in front of some 1,500 people.

The 78-year-old, who made no statement before killing himself, carried a letter on his person and placed it on the altar before shooting himself. The contents of the letter were not released to the media.

Mr. Venner reportedly pulled out a pistol and shot himself through the mouth next to the altar of the 850-year-old monument.

An attendant attempted to resuscitate the historian before emergency services arrived.

The incident comes just days after a 50-year-old man killed himself with a sawn-off shotgun in front of dozens of children at a private Catholic school near the Eiffel tower.
