Demolition has begun at the site of Newtown, Connecticut's Sandy Hook Elementary School where a gunman killed 20 children and six adults before taking his own life last December.

The demolition project will last several weeks and is expected to be complete before the one year anniversary.

A new school will be built on the site. It's slated to open in three years.

Sandy Hook students have been attending school in a nearby town.
