18-year-old wannabe firefighter starts $500,000 fire at library to help put it out

Florida teen Joseph Michael Brannen wanted to be a firefighter. So he started a real $500,000 fire at a Brooksville library thinking he could help local firefighters put out the blaze.

Talk about burning ambition.

On July 6th, a witness saw the wannabe firefighter running down the road donning a firefighters' bunker gear as the East Hernando Branch Library billowed smoke.

When asked about his attire, Brannen explained he was studying to become a fireman.

Firefighters arriving at the scene noticed the suspicious-looking young man who explained he had purchased the get up on eBay and that he wanted to help.

He wasn't allowed to.

Firefighters found burning wicker furniture piled up against the library's back porch door and were able to contain the fire.

The blaze, however, triggered sprinklers inside the building causing over $500,000 in damages.

Brannen eventually admitted to having started the fire himself.
