Heavy fighting forces Syrians to seek cover in caves

In the Syrian town of Areeha - gunfire and worse, tankfire have reduced homes to shells. They have also forced locals to pack up their belongings and seek refuge in nearby caves.

SOUNDBITE: Abu Salem, Syrian, saying (Arab):

"We lost our homes, look where we are living now, in a cave that is uninhabitable. We came and tried to clean it, there was water and dirt here. We came here because we are scared of these barrels that have no mercy on the young or the old. What can we do?"

Rebels are battling for control of this town -- which sits along a key supply route for President Bashar al Assad's forces.

The return of UN inspectors --- who are here to investigate the use of chemical weapons seems to be no deterrent to the fighting. Convoys of inspectors arrived at a Damascus hotel on Wednesday -- a week after they confirmed that sarin gas was used in an August 21rst attack.
