German citizens give their vote to foreigners on Facebook
Germany heads to the polls on Sunday for the country’s general election, and Rick will be voting as instructed by Lola, a 70-year-old Spanish woman. Scores of Germans like Rick are handing over their vote to foreigners so they too can have their say.
As Luisa explains in this video, the outcome of this election will have a significant impact on Europe and the rest of the world. She has also joined the “Electoral Rebellion” Facebook page and will be voting on behalf of someone outside of Germany.
So via this page, German voters can give up their vote to a web user from a different country, who will have to explain their voting preference and why the election in Germany, which has been the biggest contributor to bail-out funds across the Eurozone, is something they want to be involved in.
Victor Rodriguez from Spain for example thinks a left wing government would handle the financial crisis more effectively and adopt more flexible austerity measures for southern European countries.
The campaign, which carries symbolic weight, was launched by the group “Egality Berlin” and was inspired by a similar initiative in Israel back in January for the parliamentary elections, when Israeli citizens donated their votes to Palestinians.
