STORY: Chilean police turned water cannon on protesters on Thursday as hooded activists clashed with riot police in the streets of Santiago.

Police estimated some 25,000 took part in the largely peaceful march to press for education reforms, but clashes broke out towards the end of the march when hooded protesters encountered police. Student groups said some 80,000 people took part in the protest.

Teachers and trade unions also joined the march aimed at pressing student demands for a free and universal education.

Police fired tear gas and detained a number of protesters. At least five were reported injured.
