Hundreds feared dead in India floods

Scenes of devastation in flood ravaged northern India.

This year rains are at least twice as heavy in northwest and central India, due to the annual monsoon season's unusual intensity.

Hundreds have died and the interior minister says that number could go higher.

(SOUNDBITE) (Hindi) INDIA'S INTERIOR MINISTER, SUSHIL KUMAR SHINDE SAYING:

"I have received a report confirming the deaths of 207 people, but with people buried under the debris it could be more. I will go there tomorrow for more information and, if the weather allows, I will also see the place."

Tens of thousands have been evacuated and rescue efforts continue.

People across the country offer their prayers.

The government is offering aid, but that may be cold comfort to those who have lost it all.
