Female viagra turns on women's mind and body

Female viagra could be available by 2016 if drug manufacturer Emotional Brain gets its way with the drug Lybridos.

Emotional Brain, a company with offices in the U.S. and the Netherlands, is currently working on two drugs to treat Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD), also known as a low sex drive. The main one, called Lybridos, is claimed by the manufacturer to have been effective for women with low sex drive. The company claims that the drug can "increase sexual motivation and physiological sexual response, such as blood flow to the genitals and lubrication."

Unlike male Viagra that works on just the plumbing, Lybridos also targets areas of the female brain related to sexual desire. Lybridos affects levels of serotonin and dopamine in the brain. The delayed-release drug has a mint-flavoured coating that contains testosterone to boost sexual desire.

But as with any prescription drug, what about the myriad of possible side-effects? Do we run the risk of literally opening up a Pandora's Box? Who knows what might come out? Instead of taking more drugs, why don't we just teach all boys to build their vocabulary so they can all be cunning linguists?
